The 2007 Tippmann/World Challenge from September 22-23, at Hell Survivors in Pinckney MI. I took a number of pictures while out on the field, and some can be seen here (not in chronological order). Video was also taken, toward the bottom of the page.
This year most of the action occurred around the Castle, Mitchell crossing, the Meatgrinder as always, and some in the Village/City. There was also plenty of woodsball action in the backwater bases but we didn't film any of that.
The rules of this game are simple; one team (red) is composed of players using Tippmann markers, and everybody else is on the World team (yellow). The Tippmann team outnumbers World every year and has also won every year, since 2003. This year, thanks to the spectacular leadership of the Smart Corps team players, the World team finally was able to win for the first time in years.
These pieces of media show viewpoints from the World team (Yellow). Featured are many people from shockerowners.com, smartpartsowners.com, and other internet communities, including Russ "Blizzard", Elizabeth, Marcos "crzmx", Dennis "DTM", Ydna, Chris "sithrazar", and others. Video was taken by DTM and Blizzard, pictures by Ydna.

Pictures taken at the South side of the Mitchell hill.
The team advanced up toward the Castle.
The team advances from the Castle and attacks the hill above Mitchell crossing.
Firebase Bravo. The small pillboxes are new to this year (earlier years had nothing to hide behind, except trees).
Woodsball action, West of Firebase Bravo (attacking West Point bunker, seen in the last pic)
Airplane insertion moving through the Village. This pic was taken during the Village video (below).
Meatgrinder action. These pictures are taken from the Westward end of the Grinder, opposite end of the video clips (below).

Video:
The video viewpoint is again from the Yellow team. Videos were filmed on Saturday as well as Sunday. The cameramen are known to follow around our specific group of people, so a good portion of the footage is centered around that. The following maps show the approximate route the cameraman followed while filming the videos.
Saturday - Part 1: Castle attack | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (39-MB) |
We(Yellow) attack the Castle from the East and attempt to gain territory around it. There are only a few Red players inside the Castle, but we have a shooting-lane around the doorway so no additional Red can enter it. |
Saturday - Part 2: Mitchell crossing | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (38-MB) |
We(Yellow) have taken the Castle and continue to push Westward past it. This takes us to attacking the Mitchell Crossing hill zone, the bridge/crossing itself, then later pushing past the road and up toward the Pentagon (after the Red tank runs away). In reality this was a very long process that took at least a half hour, so it gives you an idea to the amount of time passing thrroughout this video. |
Sunday - Part 1: Mitchell crossing | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (29-MB) |
Same area of the field as the last video (West of the Castle). Neither team has many players so the front line didn't move much. |
Sunday - Part 2: Village defense |
Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (31-MB) |
We(Yellow) own the Village, so the Red team sends three Airplanes into it in attempt to take it over (see below for info on Airplanes). Normally this would have been a damaging tactic, however it seems the players riding on the Airplanes didn't know what they were doing and just wandered around aimlessly. Despite that, we chose to follow the Planes around since the Village didn't have many Yellow defending it. A group of the Airplane players quickly drop off around the flag building (D3) but they blew their chance to change the flag, then got eliminated pretty quickly. |
Sunday - Part 3: Mitchell hill | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (30-MB) |
Elsewhere on the field, we(Yellow)'ve pushed up toward the hill above Mitchell crossing. Before the team can cross over the hill, a Red Airplane moves up and causes all the Yellow to retreat in advance. Only a few of us stayed behind to hold the line, but we were all eventually taken out, allowing the Red on the other side of the road to move up and gain some big ground. |
Sunday - Part 4: Meatgrinder | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (39-MB) |
Some light action in the Meatgrinder (netting area), then a view of people lurking in the swamp next to it, and lastly some heavier Meatgrinder action. |
Sunday - Part 5: Meatgrinder | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (37-MB) |
Meatgrinder standstill. Ydna makes a suicide run at the end and gets his ass kicked (unfortunately our cameraman didn't catch it). |
Sunday - Part 6: Meatgrinder | Low-res (5-MB)
High-res (35-MB) |
Meatgrinder standstill, up until the Mercenary team inserts onto the field, sweeping through the Grinder just before the end of the game. The cameraman eventually gets tired of being shot and backs off. |
Monster Game / Tippmann Challenge Rules:
The videos show a number of special things happening throughout the gameplay. Here's a few explanations:
· Tanks: These are used to circle the field for a few minutes to make use of the increased firepower that usually is mounted to the top (each tank is different). Tanks and the people inside them can't be eliminated from the game, so any players allied with the tank can use it to gain ground if the enemy players retreat out of the tank's range (which usually happens).
Tanks are typically "purchased" by either team for a period of time on the field, however during this particular game the tanks weren't purchased very often. As a result the tank drivers decided they would simply enter the field and attack players on either team.
· Truck insertions: Players are shuttled out to the backwater areas of the field using the large deuce-and-a-half trucks. The players taking truck insertions aren't live until they reach their destination (can't fire or be fired upon) which is why they're not involved in the action when seen on the roads.
· Airplane insertions: The groups of players holding onto a large pole while walking the field are taking an "Airplane" ride. These players can't shoot, but they can drop grenades. They also can't be shot while riding the Plane, but a player can drop off at any point by letting go of the pole; when this happens the player is instantly live wherever he/she stands. The Airplane has only a few minutes of fuel, so once the time runs out all the players must drop off and are instantly live.
Airplanes can be useful because they allow players riding them to walk right through enemy areas of the field and drop off anywhere they wish (regular insertions can only enter the field at areas owned by the team). They also cause confusion and even panic since enemy players usually retreat to avoid being eliminated by grenade (seen in the Mitchell hill video). However, obviously the Airplane will get crushed if it runs out of fuel in a spot surrounded by enemy players (this happens in the Village video).
